Not too long after the NASA developed memory foam was used in the space shuttle, scientists modified the foam into what is today know as visco elastic memory foam, for mass market consumer use.

Once visco elastic memory foam hit the market, consumers were presented with more options. The spring mattress was no longer the main choice of sleeping comfort.
